STEADY FORCES ACTING ON SHIPS WITH ADVANCE VELOCITY IN OBLIQUE WAVES

Many experimental and calculated results are available regarding added resistance in head waves. There are few results available, however, for oblique wave conditions and little existing data on the three steady forces of added resistance, lateral force and turning moment. Information on these three forces is needed in order to know the behavior of a ship in oblique waves. The authors have used ray theory to calculate the added resistance of a blunt-bowed ship in short waves and show how the remaining two steady forces can easily be gotten by extending this method. Calculations are compared with the results of experiments carried out in a rectangular basin with a wave generator.
