Some of the changes in lifeboat operations that have come about as a result of the 1982 amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention are reviewed. They include: improvements in ship evacuation procedures; better protection of survivors after abandonment; improved lifeboat location aids; and dissemination of the results of studies on optimal techniques for rescuing survivors from lifeboats.
