CONTAINER LEASING LOOKS TO THE 1990S

To augment the inherent flexibility of intermodal transportation, container lessors are offering a variety of packages to suit the requirements of different shippers. Those packages provide an alternative--and sometimes a stepping stone--to costly equipment purchase. The aspects dealt with in this review of the leasing outlook include: the transition that the leasing industry is undergoing; the way in which leasing operates; tax laws in relation to leasing; the impact upon shippers of the tight equipment market that is on the horizon; and what benefits, if any, might attach to buying in lieu of leasing.
