RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PBCF (PROPELLER BOSS CAP FIN), NEW AND PRACTICAL DEVICE TO ENHANCE PROPELLER EFFICIENCY

The PBCF (Propeller Boss Cap Fin) is a boss cap having a number of small fins that rotate together with the propeller blades and rectify the flow behind the propeller boss. The hub vortex is substantially weakened and the kinetic energy of the rotating flow around the boss is recovered by the fins. The result is a significant increase in propeller efficiency. This paper reports on investigations of the PBCF effect, discussing measurement of the flow velocity behind the propeller, thrust and torque measurements, tests of the influence on cavitation, and actual sea-trial data. The overall results indicate that the PBCF is an effective and practical energy-saving device that will reliably produce an efficiency gain of about 4% in terms of fuel consumption.
