DESIGN OF FREEBOARD HEIGHT WITH THE NUMERICAL SIMULATION ON THE SHIPPING WATER

Using a model of an S-175 containershp in regular head waves, measurements were made of wave heights at 40 points on the forecastle deck and of impact pressure acting on a water breaker. The wave height contours, the quantity of shipped water on deck and impact pressures that are predicted by the Method of Characteristics in the time domain are in good agreement with the measurements. These numerical simulations show that the quantity of water shipped and the impact pressures acting on the water breaker are sharply reduced when freeboard height is increased or when ship speed is reduced.
