TRADE FORCES INFLUENCING THE MARITIME INDUSTRY AND PORTS

Thirty five slides originally presented before the Massport 5th Annual Maritime Conference in 1990 are reproduced, along with an updated accompanying narrative. The presentation focuses on the container trade and the container fleet because of the belief that some of the fastest growth in shipping will be in the container trade and that the dynamics in this sector may have major implications during the 1990s for ports throughout the world. These implications include: continued strong trade growth and additional container penetration; a continuing increase in the number of container ships; changes in service patterns, port rationalization and growth in feeder services due to growth in the size of main line vessels; and container flow imbalances.
