THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF THE MOTIONS OF A SHIP ADVANCING IN WAVES

The hydrodynamic problem of a surface ship advancing in regular waves at constant forward speed is analyzed using a three- dimensional theory based on the linearized velocity potential. The potential is represented by a distribution of sources over the surface of the ship and its waterline. Various numerical schemes are introduced to overcome some of the major difficulties previously encountered in this problem. Calculations are made for a submerged sphere, resulting in good agreement when compared with the analytical solution. Some preliminary calculations are also shown for a series 60 ship with block coefficient 0.7. A major difficulty that remains is the evaluation of the Green function when both source and field points are near the free surface.
