THE CONSTRUCTION OF SURFACE WARSHIPS AND HIGH TECHNOLOGY MERCHANT SHIPS
The shipbuilding industry has risen to the challenge of constructing ships of ever-increasing levels of technology within a more competitive commercial environment and in the midst of user demands for higher reliability of equipment. The need for producing these vessels more cheaply and more quickly have led to rapid development in the integration of design engineering, materials procurement and production efforts. A discussion of cost-saving production methods is presented drawing attention to unification of work breakdown methods and project management systems. It is shown that the formation of attitudes that promote total product quality is an important precondition to the effectiveness of organizations. So too does the working relationship between employees and management. Finally, the issues pertaining to the simultaneous construction of warships and advanced merchant ships is examined.
