STATE OF THE WORLD 1993. A WORLDWATCH INSTITUTE REPORT ON PROGRESS TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

This book chapter describes the rise and fall of rail transportation, re-examines the benefits of rail transportation, and reports on the revival of rail transportation. The author points out the mistake that governments have made in abandoning railways for highways. Many countries are beginning to make commitments to improve and expand rail systems, shifting the transportation focus from the automobile to an integrated mix of transportation options.
