ANTIABRASION COATINGS--A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO VESSEL LIFE EXTENSION PROGRAMMES

Shipyards around the world are currently busy with a number of major repairs to large bulk carriers and VLCC/ULCCs. This work is being specified by shipowners as part of large-scale life extension programs, brought about the Third Special Survey requirements. In the majority of cases, extensive steel renewals are required owing to the severe corrosion occurring in many of the ships. It is explained how these expensive repairs could have been averted if the owners had the foresight to invest in high performance antiabrasion coatings as part of their regular vessel maintenance programs.
