EVALUATION OF MCKELLIGON CANYON AGGREGATE WITH RESPECT TO FRICTIONAL PROPERTIES. DRAFT REPORT

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) uses polish value (PV) test for evaluating polish susceptibility of coarse aggregates used in pavement construction rehabilitation work. In Texas, PV is used to qualify an aggregate for use in hot mix asphalt concrete (HMAC) and seal coat mixes. Based on the PV requirements, the aggregate of McKelligon Canyon in El Paso district was classified as unacceptable material for use in HMAC and surface treatment projects. However, no particular problem with regard to skid resistance has been observed on pavements constructed with this aggregate. Therefore, TxDOT, El Paso district was interested in investigating the possibility of qualifying the material based on its performance history. The investigation involved selection of pavement sections constructed with the material in question for skid tests, and collection of traffic data on those sections. Procedures followed in developing the skid performance history and the results obtained from skid data analysis are discussed. The results show that skid numbers change due to seasonal variation. The skid performance curve is very sensitive to the accuracy of the input information. Pavement sections with good quality of traffic data showed better performance than sections with poor quality traffic data. More tests on sections which have good traffic information are recommended for getting better representation of the actual field performance. In addition, the study also investigated the possibility of improving the PV of the above aggregate by blending it with other high PV aggregates.
