COMMUNICATING WITH THE MOTORIST BY SIGNING AT JUNCTIONS

This paper which reviews the objectives and problems of signing at junctions, the means for encouraging motorists to obey such signs, and the possible future developments within the field of electronic control, covers direction signing, regulatory signing and advisory signing. Changing signs on motorways and variable signs on general purpose roads are reviewed. Electronic information devices described here include the Road Information Transmitted Aurally (RITA), Advance Warning Equipment (AWARE) and the Electronic Route Guidance System. The environmental impact of signs is discussed.
