DESIGN OF TUG-BARGE SYSTEMS FOR MINIMUM ENERGY CONSUMPTION

The selection of marine engines is discussed as well as energy conservation in domestic services. The reduction of speed results in much better utilization of fuel and may be more economical for the tug/barge system as a whole. Ways to refine the tug and barge design to reduce resistance and increase performance are suggested, and the economies of pushing are reviewed.
