NOISE DESIGN METHODS FOR SHIPS

A logical approach to the whole process of noise control for ships is required in order to ensure that correct techniques are employed, as appropriate, at each stage of ship design. Adherence to such a procedure will not only assist the ship designer in making decisions with respect to noise control installations, but also will be of assistance in asking the advice of specialist consultants and in interpreting their replies. This paper briefly describes various acoustical techniques of estimation and control with respect to ship design. More important, it suggests a logical approach to the whole noise design process. Knowledge of the procedures should help alleviate the pressure on the ship designer to make decisions in an area where he or she does not have specialist knowledge.
