SHIP CONSTRUCTION AND SAFETY--TANKERS FOR THE 1990S

Ships were originally designed to protect the cargo from the environment. Now they must additionally be designed to protect the environment from the cargo. In this connection, this paper considers: the causes of tanker casualties; age-related problems in the existing fleet; structural trends and optimization in the design of the new generation of tankers; and the long-term safety and reliability of the new designs.
