A NEW TANKER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION DUTIES AND DEPLOYMENT AS A PRODUCT CARRIER--OFFERS AN ADVANCE ON THE PRESENT OIL RECOVERY VESSELS

The oil recovery ships THOR and BOTTSAND have been available in West Germany for combating oil pollution in harbors, estuaries and off the coast since 1981 and 1985, respectively. The results of trials with these special tankers have been excellent, suggesting that the new technology they embodied is certainly practicable. Some reservations, however, have led to a rethinking of the system as a whole, especially as regards the shipbuilding aspects. The upshot has been application for a patent for a new tanker for duties in environmental protection and as a products carrier.
