REAL TIME DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM OF DIESEL ENGINE BY STATISTICAL SOUND ANALYSIS

This paper describes a system in which an abnormal engine condition is diagnosed by its radiated sound. Valve clearance of the exhaust valve and the injection pressure of fuel valve are selected as factors for indicating abnormalities. The diagnostic algorithm consists of several segments; they deal with sound selection, digitalization of the sound signal, spectral analysis and statistical analysis. These processes are handled quickly and continuously by a microcomputer. It is explained how the system was used to diagnose an operating engine. The diagnoses took about 11 seconds each, and results were successfully obtained.
