READYING EXXON VALDEZ FOR DRY DOCK

The operation is described in which a nine-man dive team from the Fred Devine Diving & Salvage firm in Portland, Oregon, detached seven giant pieces of dangling steel plating from the underside of the crippled EXXON VALDEZ as the ship lay stranded in 3,000-ft waters 50 miles from San Diego, California. The dangerous project was undertaken so that the ship could be safely brought into NASSCO's giant dock for repairs.
