It is told how lists of toxic substances that cannot be carried prior to vegetable oil cargoes have developed. The lists address a problem faced by the P&I Clubs, which are confronted with millions of dollars worth of claims arising from the contamination of animal and vegetable oil and fat cargoes through contact with the remnants of highly toxic products previously carried by the vessels concerned. A list developed by the National Institute of Oilseed Products (NIOP) of cargoes that may and may not be carried prior to the transport of vegetable oil and related cargoes is presented in a sidebar. The existence of the lists will have a substantial impact upon chemical tanker shipping.
