BIODETERIORATION OF PLASTICS IN THE SEA

Traditionally, plastics are selected for marine applications where wood or metals would be susceptible to deterioration. Recent experience, however, indicates that plastics can also be severely attacked in some marine environments. A case history from Indonesia is given of boring clams, or pholads, causing through-wall pits in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) within one year.
