MATERIALS HANDLING IN SHIPBUILDING--FUTURE DIRECTIONS

The production technology employed in shipyards is undergoing changes based on the introduction of group technology and workstations. There is an opportunity to reduce inventory levels and to introduce flexible automation. Materials handling is also changing, principally through the introduction of automated guidance for vehicles. The benefits available from the latest control technology are those required in shipbuilding in implementing its technological change. The utilization of the latest material handling technologies has the potential to produce significant cost savings for the shipbuilding industry.
