The growing maturity of fiber optic technology lends increasing importance to the compatibility of system components. This article addresses the question of whether a technician equipped with an arc-fusion splicer can join geranium-doped silica single-mode optical fibers made by different manufacturers. The answer, according to a study conducted by Corning that is described in some detail, is that it is possible for a technician in the field to join heterogeneous single-mode fibers without excessive signal loss.
