Submarine construction shipyards are in the midst of long-term programs to implement new technology in order to improve their competitive positions. Initiatives such as zone-oriented construction are well underway and others such as the integration of computer networks in manufacturing are now gaining momentum. This infusion of new technology requires an array of new design products. The U.S. Navy's SEAWOLF Advanced Submarine Program's design effort is putting forth a major effort to present a design that supports the implementation of technology and captures the necessary attributes for an efficient construction program.
