DIAGNOSTICS OF COMBUSTION IN DIESEL ENGINES WITH OPTICAL FIBERS--AN APPLICATION TO AN INVESTIGATION OF THE PISTON CROWN DAMAGE

The authors have proposed a way of using optical fibers to measure the spectrum of diesel engine combustion flames and a simplified method for estimating the flame temperature from the data obtained. These techniques were applied to a practical engine in service, a JR diesel railcar engine, that was frequently subject to piston head fusion damage caused by the high temperature of the combustion flames. The investigation clarified the piston damage process and led to countermeasures to prevent the problem.
