It is described how the demand for liquefied natural gas on the part of Japan's many smaller utility companies may give rise to a new species of gas carrier. The cargo tank capacity of an optimal vessel of the type needed would be about 1,000 cubic meters. The navigation route would be limited to the coast and the voyage duration would be one to three days. Cargo transfer operations would be completed within a few hours and a shuttle service approach would be utilized to improve transport efficiency.
