ELECTRONIC PROXIMITY LIMIT SENSORS FOR USE IN THE OFFSHORE ENVIRONMENT

Proximity switches are generally classified as position sensing devices. They can monitor the position of a door, valve or other moving object and electronically communicate that position to a remote indicator. This article first explains the two techniques used in these magnetic flux field proximity switches, which have no moving parts and are therefore extraordinarily reliable. The techniques are Eddy Current Loss (ECL) and Variable Reluctance (VR). The applications and advantages of each of the two types are discussed. The article concludes with a section describing the basics of proximity switch construction and operation.
