There is a wider choice than ever before in propulsion systems for new harbor tugs. Tug orders rarely call, any longer, for a conventional, single-screw, traditional vessel. The newer technology that is available, and that economy demands be used, is briefly reviewed. It includes screw propellers with thrust-augmenting nozzles, Voith Schneider propulsion units, and twin-propellers.
