COMPARTMENT FLOODING TIME AS IT RELATES TO THE CHANGE IN HOLE DEPTH

Equations are derived for calculating the time it takes a ship compartment to flood when water enters through a hole. It is assumed that the compartment is straight-walled, that the ship has a straight trim and maintains it as the water enters, and that the area of the waterline does not change as the ship floods. The importance of the ratio of the area of the compartment being flooded to that of the ship's waterplane is made evident by the functions derived.
