THE EFFECT OF MOTIONS IN ASSESSING INTACT SHIP STABILITY

This paper shows how a design study could quantify the intact stability or safety of a vessel in terms of its peak roll amplitude in a specified severe environmental condition and determine whether these factors could be improved by either varying the vessel's vertical center of gravity or improving the vessel's roll damping characteristics. The alternative approach of limiting the environmental conditions in which the vessel can operate while staying within its safe peak roll amplitude is also discussed.
