A TIME SIMULATION APPROACH TO THE ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGE SURVIVABILITY OF RO/RO CARGO SHIPS
A draft probabilistic method of assessing damage survivability is used to study the survival potential of a roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) cargo vessel. This proposal is then modified in the light of damage statistics to make it more comprehensive and sensitive to the subdivision arrangement of ro/ro ships, and the influences of the proposed modifications are quantified. The computations are done with the help of a time simulation program, because intermediate stages of flooding can be important in the assessment of damage survivability. The aim of the study is to provide an insight into the influence of design features on the survivability assessment procedure and vice versa, as a contribution to the rational development of damage survivability regulations for cargo ships in general, and ro/ro ships in particular.
