NEW METHOD FOR ELASTIC ANALYSIS OF THE HULL GIRDER UNDER TORSION

A new beam model is described for the calculation of the static horizontal-torsional response of a ship with large deck openings. The hull beam is subdivided into elements within which the cross sectional properties are considered constant. As a one-dimensional finite element, each prismatic piece has six degrees of freedom. A mathematical model is developed, based on finite-element realization of semimoment shell theory. The model can take into account the main distortion of the cross sections in their planes, shear deformation in the middle surface, interaction effects between opened and closed parts, and the restraining effects of transverse deck strips. An original computer program developed on the basis of the model is outlined. Results obtained using the proposed method are compared with those obtained by thin-walled beams theory and the traditional finite element method.
