INVESTIGATION OF THE SEAKEEPING QUALITIES OF A CANADIAN FORCE RESEARCH VESSEL

This paper reports on a study of the seakeeping qualities of the Canadian Forces Research Vessel CFAV ENDEAVOUR. In the study, the ship was considered as a rigid body floating freely (with six degrees of freedom) at the water surface. The equations of motion for a ship advancing at a constant mean forward speed in waves were solved by adopting the strip theory approach to find the motion properties. A computer model named "SHIPMO" was then developed for the prediction of ship seakeeping properties under different ship operational scenarios. Ship motion predictions and the vibration ride quality indices in unidirectional seas were obtained and presented for a variety of ship headings. Based on the obtained results, it is clear that the ship possesses acceptable seakeeping qualities.
