WEATHER PROTECTION BUILT-IN TO HATCH COVERS

Refrigerated ships are susceptible to bad weather, and can especially be affected by rainy conditions when loading or discharging cargo. It is described how, to deal with this problem, a series of four 375,000 cu ft. reefer vessels are to be fitted with an innovative hatch cover system designed for full weather protection. The reefers will be called the "Crystal" type. The system calls for fitting a small hatch cover directly underneath the main weatherdeck cover when it is in the closed position. When the weatherdeck cover is fully opened, the small hatch cover is hydraulically actuated into its "open" position, providing effective rain shelter for the sensitive cargo.
