Sealink British Ferries is introducing two very large ships of unique concept on the short sea route between Dover and Calais. They were produced by converting two long-haul trailer ferries into high-capacity cross-Channel passenger and vehicle carriers that offer facilities approaching those of cruise ships. The modifications involved in the conversion for the first of the two vessels, the FANTASY, are described, as are the life-saving equipment and machinery. Although a number of ro/ro freight ferries have been converted into small up-market cruise ships in recent years, none of the conversions has approached the scale of this operation for the FANTASY and her sistership, the FIESTA.
