DISTORTION CONTROL IN SIMULATED ONE-PASS PANEL BEAD WELDS

An account is given of an investigation of the effectiveness of certain procedures in reducing the angular distortion of panel head welds. The procedures were chosen on the basis of the feasibility of incorporating them into proctice, and involve stretching loads, preheat, heat input and restraint. The results of a finite element analysis and simulations of thermo-mechanical response to welding are compared with experimental measurements and with analytical expressions, when available.
