NEW PHOTOVOLTAIC AIDS TO NAVIGATION--A CASE STUDY

An evaluation is presented of the performance of a solar-powered light in operation for more than six years in a lighthouse of the Coast Directorate, Norway. The light operated with limited maintenance, provided a remarkably high mean time between failures, and exhibited very low life-cycle costs. These are all critical points for aid-to-navigation installations, particularly when those installations are inaccessible in winter. The energy provided by the photovoltaic assembly is stored in nickel cadmium batteries.
