NEW WATER-SPRAY PROPOSAL TO FIGHT ENGINE ROOM FIRES

A prototype system for dousing engine room fires by installing local water spray facilities at critical points above the machinery is described. Initial tests of the system have been completed at the fire protection section of Sweden's National Testing Institute, and an installation might possibly be made aboard a Swedish vessel during 1990. Interest in the system owes to the prospect that extinguishing systems based on halon are likely to be outlawed. The new system, positioned at locations at maximum risk from oil spray fires, is intended to complement carbon-dioxide-based systems that would ultimately be relied upon for fire extinguishment but that take longer to come into operation.
