Navigators worldwide have experienced the benefits of the small but effective radar transponder, the racon, to detect and identify all types of navigational aids that might enhance navigational safety. The racon is of particular advantage in areas where there are a number of targets on the radar screen. Along the coast of Sweden, the Administration of Shipping and Navigation has installed a system consisting of numerous coded racons, that together with ships' radars, can provide reliable fixes 24 hours a day under all weather conditions. The configuration and operation of the system are described, and fourteen figures showing radar screen displays, charts and racon installations are shown.
