IMO AND THE PEACEFUL USE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY THROUGH THE LAST 30 YEARS

The author's thesis is that with the development and progress on land in the production of nuclear power for generating electricity and with nuclear propulsion being extensively used for navy surface vessels and submarines, it would be strange and unbelievable if the technical advancement achieved could not be exploited for the safe and economical operation of nuclear merchant ships in the relatively near future. He specifically examines the role that the International Maritime Organization has played in developing a safety code for nuclear merchant ships, in sponsoring symposia on nuclear propulsion, and in addressing the issues of port use by nuclear ships and the liability of nuclear ship operators.
