SHIPMENT FOR STEELMAKING: RAW MATERIALS, STEEL AND STEEL PRODUCTS
Viewed from a shipping standpoint, a steelworks is a link between two very different types of shipping service. The first carries the coking coal, iron ore and ferrous alloys as the input, and demands the largest bulk carriers available on longterm contracts. The other takes steel bars, coils, plates and semifinished products as the output, and employs small bulkers on a spot basis to a port of the customer's choice. This role that shipping plays in the global steel industry is examined.
