PREVIEW OF BENEFITS FROM SKYWAVE RADAR MEASUREMENTS OF SEA STATE

HF (Skywave) radar for real-time synoptic sea-state measurement is now very close to operational feasibility. When this new technique becomes a reality, those sectors of the economy that are engaged in marine activity can expect considerable economic and social benefit from this source of accurate environmental data. For the first time, the waveheight directional spectrum can be continuously measured to a distance of approximately 2000 nautical miles (nmi) from each radar site. These data are important to the safety and efficiency of such activities as commercial shipping, ocean fishing, Naval operations, the offshore petroleum industry, and others. The direct benefits each year to the various users of these data are expected to exceed the total costs of constructing the required facilities by a factor of six or more.
