This paper describes a software system intended to assist the prospective buyers of a vessel offered for sale. It helps to evaluate the condition of the vessel and its machinery and, taking account of the buyer's requirements, helps to estimate the necessary cost of repairs. In ths way, it serves as an additional standardized reference point in making an offer. In its final form, the system will be loaded onto a portable PC computer, so that it can be used interactively during, or immediately after, the inspection of a vessel. The system divides the ship into basic units composed of various items (equipment, systems). Data on the apparent condition of each item, as well as information on the cost of repair or replacement of various parts, is requested by the user in an interactive mode. A coupled knowledge base is accessed to provide default values on costs as well as additional information on various types of machinery. The system will provide estimates on the total cost of required repairs and produce a report in a standard format to be used as a reference. A prototype version of a subset of the system is presented.
