A SPECTRUM OF FUTURE MARINE FUELS FOR MERCHANT SHIPS

A brief review is given of the growth of the use of oil as a fuel for merchant ships. A number of alternative energy sources are identified and their applications to the marine industry are examined. It is stressed that the introduction of any alternative fuel will ultimately be determined by the development of an international supply infrastructure, a complex arrangement that can only be realized after tremendous efforts that could take years.
