This paper addresses the potential for using data generated by computer-based monitoring systems that provide the vessel operator with a continuous evaluation of vessel performance. An alarm and monitoring system is described. A Vital Signs monitoring algorithm is developed for a typical parameter on a propulsion diesel engine. Models that sum up a set of scaled measurement values to predict a monitoring point value are studied and solutions are presented. It is explained how a vital signs monitoring system presents a way to minimize the probability of equipment breakdown and contribute to the safe and economical operation of the modern fishing vessel.
