The use of fins for motion compensation in SWATH ships must take account of how highly coupled the various vessel motions are. Compensators for heave motion, for example, will affect pitch, and vice versa. The question addressed in this paper is that of how to design compensators that can cope with the multivariable (coupled) and high-order nature of the problem, and having designed them, how to make sure that the complication introduced by the multivariable and high-order nature of the compensator can be adequately dealt with in real time.
