THE SYNOCROLIFT SYSTEM FOR DRY DOCKING SHIPS

Removal of a ship from water for drydocking imposes unnatural loads on the hull. Although no drydocking system provides support comparable to that of the waterborne state, the vertical shiplift with an articulated platform best emulates that condition. The Syncrolift is such a system. It basically consists of an elevator with an articulated structural steel platform upon which are affixed a series of keel blocks and/or several rails on which wheeled transfer cradles are mounted. These elements and others that comprise Syncrolift are described and their interactions explained. An accompanying chart compares the characteristics of various drydocking systems: the graving dock, floating drydock, marine railway and ship lift.
