PRESENT AND FUTURE TECHNOLOGY OF SHIP'S AUTOMATION

From the standpoint of the ship operator, the successful automation of ship systems is highly dependent upon progress in the design of control systems. While manufacturers may invest a great deal of effort in the introduction of new technology, however, operators may find themselves unable to keep abreast of the new advances or to master new complexities. The designer may come up with an improved system with better cost performance, but the knowledge gap between the manufacturer and the operator might well stand in the way of its advantageous use. This paper therefore argues for adherence to the principle that "simple is best" when dealing with the technology for ship automation.
