FENDER TECHNOLOGY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF MOTION CHARACTERISTICS OF MOORED SHIP

Even after a ship has safely berthed or moored, it is possible for it to suffer excessive motions that can cause severe difficulties in cargo handling or can snap the mooring ropes. One of the factors that intensifies and amplifies the ship motions and mooring rope tensions is excessive stiffness of the fendering system. It is described how, for a given mooring arrangement, motion characteristics of a 35,000 dwt bulk carrier were studied for three different types of fenders. The study employed a numerical modeling technique and clearly demonstrated that use of the proper type of fender could significantly reduce ship motion amplitudes and mooring rope tensions.
