The new emphasis in the design of straddle carriers is on ergonomics and maintenance systems. This represents a significant change from the days when the early straddle carriers had an unenviable reputation for unreliability and complexity, and associated high maintenance and repair costs. The new designs are reducing the frequency of breakdowns to the point where, for high throughput terminals, machine availability exceeds the 95% mark.
