CONTRASTING ATTITUDES TO SELLING INFORMATION NETWORKS

After a decade in the field, GE Information Services (Geis) claims to have more than 6,000 clients using its network to send EDI communications. With this client base as a starting point, and with a track record in software systems, Geis is seeking to widen the range of information services by launching to the trade a new network-based service called CARGO*LINK. Copenhagen-based BIMCO has also decided to enter the field, offering a global communication network called BIMCOM, run for and by the shipping industry. The expectations underlying these new offerings are briefly discussed.
